Intermodal Expressive Arts Therapy Supervision

Are you interested in bringing the Expressive Arts into your clinical practice? Are you considering applying for the REAT credential?

Facilitated by: Jennie Kristel, MA, REAT, APTT, RMT
Meetings: Every other Wednesday, beginning 9/16/2026
This will be 16 hours of group supervision: 8 meetings – 2 times per month, 2 hours per session.
Meetings will be via the Zoom platform.

• This supervision group meets twice monthly via Zoom for therapists integrating the arts into clinical practice and those pursuing the REAT credential through IEATA.
• Grounded in relational, arts-based dialogue, the group offers ethical, socially just professional guidance to strengthen expressive arts therapy practice.
• Across four months, we will explore foundational expressive arts therapy approaches—singular, intermodal, and superimposed—along with session architecture, transference and countertransference, ethical dilemmas, case studies, and questions arising individually and collectively. Working thematically as well, we will examine cases from using motifs to deepen inquiry and connect our learning across sessions. We will also consider how to bring the arts online and respond to challenges emerging in our work and lives.
• Sessions cultivate focus, clarity, community, and curiosity. Using the arts as inquiry, we engage in artistic expression and dialogue to explore our questions and aesthetic responses.
• While supervision is not therapy, we will reflect on how our personal selves enter the work. Outside support is encouraged as needed.

• Sociometry of a group
• How to encourage clients to use the arts in therapy
• Frameworks, how to use when to use
• Transference/Counter transferance
• Role of the multi-cultural lens
• The role of Grief and Loss
• Intergenerational trauma
• Examining the role of resistance
• Other themes brought by the group!

What is needed?

• Some art supplies, scarves, objects clean recyclables,
• Musical instruments (can be handmade from recyclables!)
• Props
• A quiet and confidential space to work in.
• A good internet/wifi and computer.

Meeting on alternative Wednesday mornings, 12-2pm EST
Beginning September 16, 2026 – December 16, 2026 (dates will be emailed upon registration.)

Cost: Sliding Scale: $60.00 – $120.00 per session

Jennie Kristel, MA, REAT, APTT, is an expressive arts therapist, educator, and mixed‑media artist. She received her expressive therapies degree from Lesley University and has been a visiting instructor there since 2016, following earlier faculty work at Burlington College.

For over 35 years, Jennie has worked across diverse clinical and community settings—including inpatient and outpatient hospitals—supporting individuals facing grief, loss, trauma, and anxiety, often connected to human trafficking and domestic or sexual abuse. She maintains a private practice, offers expressive arts training, and leads workshops internationally. Since 2002, she has taught Playback Theatre and The Listening Hour throughout Southeast Asia.

Her current work centers on transgenerational and ancestral trauma, exploring the forces shaping personal, spiritual, and collective relationships through Sociometry, Sociodrama, and expressive arts therapy. A professional mixed‑media artist with extensive printmaking training, she brings a strong visual sensibility to her practice.

A long‑time member of IEATA, Jennie serves on the Governance Committee and has supervised expressive arts therapists for more than 10 years. She is co‑author of Using Art Therapy in Diverse Populations: Crossing Cultures and Abilities and has published widely on arts-based work in community settings and grief.
