The Listening Hour has been used worldwide since March of 2020 to support people experiencing isolation, conflict, and trauma, and to be a place to gather and share intimate moments of simply living in our world right now. Since then, the Listening Hour has become a place for sharing stories of all kinds: moving through challenging moments such as grief, envisioning the future, and celebrating treasured moments, thereby creating community. Created by Jonathan Fox at the beginning of the pandemic, Listening Hours are held in multiple countries by trained guides such as myself.
The purpose of the Listening Hour is to share stories. Stemming from the oral tradition, it is a way of marking who we are, where we are, and how we feel about our lives.
What is meant when we talk about sharing stories? Here, we mean something different—a true story that comes from our own experience. We remember moments that are meaningful to us, whether they are about hard times or good. If we can be open to what comes up to share in the moment, we can sometimes be pleasantly surprised, and what we have to say is often enjoyable and memorable for others as well. Our stories hold wisdom, and sharing them can build resilience in difficult times. In this way, as a community, we can build upon this wisdom.
